Jóhann Jóhannsson has announced that he will be scoring the upcoming Blade Runner 2.

This is will be his third collaboration with director Denis Villeneuve, having previously composed the music for the films, Prisoners, Sicario, and the upcoming Arrival.

Jóhannsson takes over for Vangelis, whose work on the original Blade Runner is considered by many, including myself, to be one of the greatest film scores of all time. It has a signature style, a blend of moody, dream-like atmosphere, ethereal sound effects, and musical texture which, to this day, has never been replicated, making it a true one-of-a-kind symphonic experience.

Jóhannsson’s scores are similarly rich, purposeful, layered. It will be fascinating to experience his interpretation of the sequel.

The pedigree of filmmaking talent signed on for Blade Runner 2 is phenomenal. In addition to Villeneuve and Jóhannsson, Ridley Scott will be producing, and Roger Deakins has been brought on board as the cinematographer. His work on Skyfall is a particular showcase of his talents specifically in relation to the visual style of Blade Runner.

Harrison Ford will be reprising his role as Rick Deckard, although in what capacity, no one knows. Ryan Gosling, Dave Bautista, Jared Leto, Robin Wright, and Mackenzie Davis further a stellar cast.

This has the makings of something very special indeed.

Blade Runner 2 is scheduled for release on October 7, 2017.
